Do you remember when we were kids how we used to pretend that we were cowboys, astronauts, super heroes, or big league baseball players? These days those dreams might also include rapper, reality TV star, or business tycoon… how times have changed!
When you’re a kid you have complete freedom to have big dreams. You have the ability to believe that anything is possible, because the world has yet to prevent you from believing otherwise. It’s such a gift.
I happen to believe that we ultimately create our own destiny based on the choices we make every day. Just think about it. Every day we can choose to wake up early or sleep in. We can choose to work hard or just get by. We can choose to put good things in our minds, or to fill ourselves with useless junk. We can choose to eat right, or to eat fast food. I think you get the point. Our choices are within our control.
If we make the same choices (good or bad) consistently, those choices will become habits. I’ve heard it said that it takes 21 days to form a habit. I’m not really sure about that exact number but it seems like a reasonable estimate. The good news is that habits are pure momentum in our lives. They will take us to the moon, to mediocrity, or straight into the ground if not managed properly. It’s our job to use them wisely to create the future that we desire.
I think some people are scared to encourage their kids to have big dreams in fear of creating later disappointment. My thought for the day is this. Don’t be afraid to allow your kids to dream big. Encourage them to use their imaginations and let the sky be the limit. Be positive and listen to them without judgment. The encouragement and belief you provide will create energy in them. Your job is to then focus that energy into guiding them to make good choices. Explain to them that to reach their goals they need to make the right choices every day. Those simple every day choices will help form good habits. Those good habits will ultimately cause them to achieve their dreams.
By the way, it works the same for big people. I dare you to give it a try. Dream big!
